چکیده

Highly toxic nickel is released into the environment from a number of industrial processes, but current techniques for its removal are expensive and may cause secondary pollution. We developed a biosorbent of chitosan-immobilized brown algae (Laminaria japonica). The effects of different parameters on the adsorption capacity and biosorption-desorption of Ni from aqueous solution were evaluated. Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption of Ni by the immobilized algal beads followed second-order kinetics. When the adsorbent dose was increased, the biosorption capacity decreased and the removal efficiency increased. Ni biosorption by the immobilized algae cell beads was a good fit for the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. In addition, the regenerated biosorbent by 1 mol L HCl or 1 mol L HNO3 could be reused, and maintained 90 % removal efficiency for at least three cycles.

Thermotropic behaviour of membrane lipids from brown marine alga Laminaria japonica.

Microcalorimetry was used to show that transition-temperature ranges of phospho- and glycolipids of the brown marine alga Laminaria japonica were similar (from -62 to -47 degrees C up to 62-65 degrees C), except for monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, the low-temperature limit of which was shifted to -78 degrees C. As was shown by polarizing microscopy, the low-enthalpy peaks at temperatures of appro...

Marine Drugs Article, Namikoshi, Fuijiwara, Nishikawa and Ukai, March 2006

Analysis of the natural abundance C content of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) from two edible brown algae, Undaria pinnatifida and Laminaria japonica, and a green alga, Ulva sp., revealed that the DBP was naturally produced. The natural abundance C content of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) obtained from the same algae was about 50-80% of the standard sample and the C content of the petrochemical (...

Biosorption of cadmium by biomass of brown marine macroalgae.

Five different brown seaweeds, Bifurcaria bifurcata, Saccorhiza polyschides, Ascophyllum nodosum, Laminaria ochroleuca and Pelvetia caniculata were studied for their ability to remove cadmium from aqueous solution. Kinetics of cadmium adsorption by all the algae were relatively fast, with 90% of total adsorption occurring in less than 1h. These experiments could be accurately described by a pse...

Biosorption of lead and nickel by biomass of marine algae.

Screening tests of different marine algae biomas types revealed a high passive biosorptive uptake of lead up to 270 mg Pb/g of biomass in some brown marine algae. Members of the order Fucales perfomed particularly well in this descending sequence: Fucus > Ascophyllum > Sargassum. Although decreasing the swelling of wetted biomass particles, their reinforcement by crosslinking may significantly ...
